MSI EDUCATION GOALS

  • develop credited courses for undergraduates and graduates, for example, 4-season courses in mountain geography, biology, climate, geology, sacred mountains, sustainable development, project planning and implementation, hazards monitoring and evaluation,
  • develop teacher training courses and training materials in mountain studies,
  • serve as the center for San Juan Mountain studies,
  • conduct education workshops and thematic conferences,
  • provide student scholarship stipends and internships,,
  • create forums that bring together stakeholders to discuss mining, logging, tourism and environmentally friendly incomes for mountain communities, and
  • publish and disseminate MSI-sponsored progress reports and findings.

MOUNTAIN STUDIES MINOR
MSI, in conjunction with Fort Lewis college will offer a minor in mountain studies. The course listing for the minor is currently under development. The Mountain Studies Minor will be available by the fall term of 2004.

FIELD CAMPS
In addition to the field school run by Fort Lewis College in Geology, a number of colleges and universities utilize the San Juan Mountains for various field schools.
