The Geology of the San Juans

Photo of the Sneffels RangeThe San Juan Mountains, located in southwestern Colorado and north central New Mexico, represent a varied landscape comprised not only of mountains, but of canyons, mesas, plateaus, plains, and valleys. The sheer variety of landforms makes the San Juan Mountains a veritable classroom for the student of geomorphology. One explanation for the large diversity of landscapes is that the San Juan Mountains straddle two major physiographic provinces, the Southern Rocky Mountains and the Colorado Plateau.
