Cortez
Cortez,
founded in 1886, is increasingly promoted as an archeological
center of the United States, since it is located near the
highest densities of prehistoric archeological sites in North
America. The community has easy access to internationally
recognized cultural resources, such as Mesa Verde National
Park, Hovenweep National Monument, the Anasazi Heritage Center,
Lowry Ruins, Crow Canyon, and recently designated (2000) Canyon
of the Ancients National Monument. These sites, plus extensive
BLM and San Juan National Forest public lands that contain
additional cultural, natural and recreational resources, attract
visitors from all over the world. Tourism in the Cortez area
is beginning to rival that of the Durango area economically,
making Cortez part of a new overall picture compared to the
more traditionally oriented farming communities nearby, such
as Dove Creek or Dolores. There are considerable shared desires
to maintain an identity in these communities that resemble
traditional relationships with the landscape.
