Alpine EdVentures for Families

MSI invites you and your family to join us this summer for field science and fun in the alpine!

Program Details: Description, Cost, Lodging, Dates & Itinerary

Description

Based out of MSI’s historic Mountain House in beautiful Silverton, Colorado, Alpine EdVentures is a new way to explore and learn about alpine ecosystems. It offers a unique opportunity for families with children entering grades 2-8 to do real science in really BIG Mountains. The program is designed to balance science and learning with fun and adventure for the whole family.

Cost

The cost for the entire program starts at $275 per person. At least one parent or guardian is required, but more are welcome! MSI will provide supplies, staff, group equipment, expert instruction, a welcome dinner and snacks throughout the program. Transportation from MSI's Mountain House to and from field study sites can be provided an additional $65/person. If you choose to drive yourself to the field study sites, please note that you will need a high-clearance vehicle and experience driving on single-track, unpaved roads in all conditions.

Lodging

The program price does not include lodging. If you need lodging, MSI has partnered with a local reservation service (gatewayreservations.com) that books hotels in Durango, Silverton, and other area destinations. The reservation service can also arrange for transportation to Silverton via the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - a fun way to experience the San Juan Mountains on the way to your EdVenture! Please contact us for more information.

Considerations

Please note that activities take place at 9,000 feet elevation or higher. You should expect moderate hiking (1-3 miles/day on uneven varied terrain and through shallow water). Weather in the mountains is clear and cool, but storms can bring strong winds, soaking rains and unseasonable snows. It’s all part of the fun and experience of mountain learning! When you register for the program, your registration packet will include  a "what to bring list" help you prepare for your EdVenture!
