Mountain Learning for Scientific & Environmental Literacy

We believe that through science education, information is not only understood, but used to transform our communities into healthier, more sustainable places to live. MSI has become increasingly involved in bridging the gap between citizens and the science community to empower people of all ages and occupations to use information to make decisions and take action on issues affecting their communities. Because MSI serves diverse audiences, we employ multiple projects and methods for conducting outreach.

For the public and agency partners, we host conferences, facilitate collaborative groups, conduct workshops, and coordinate educational events. At the core of these outreach strategies, lies the desire to go beyond scientific inquiry to the real application of knowledge that makes a difference to the quality of life and environment here in southwest Colorado. These programs benefits individuals by enriching their learning and the community by creating a more informed and engaged populous.

For K-College learners, we partner with teachers and professors to develop science curricula and hands-on, place-based experiences that both meet curricular goals and capitalize on MSI’s areas of expertise. Programs include “Science into Action” Service Learning, GIS and StoryMaps, Science Fair, “Restoration Generation” Workshops, High School and College Internship Programs, and Ecological Monitoring.
