2017 OSMRE Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) at MSI

MSI is searching for a talented, motivated, and self-directed individual to grow our mountain education and outreach programs as an Office of Surface Mining and Reclamation (OSMRE) Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA). The VISTA position will be located in Silverton, Colorado, in the heart of the San Juan Mountains; a community steeped in mining legacy. MSI’s VISTA will develop a Needs Assessment for our mountain communities to direct MSI education program efforts for career development, job training, and academic enrichment to forward to 21st Century skills. The VISTA will work closely with MSI and our community partners through listening session and other community events; as such, the VISTA will need strong organizational and communication skills; and the desire to engage with the diverse communities of the San Juans. Our communities are separated, often by considerable distance, due to the terrain of the San Juan Mountains. The VISTA will be required to have reliable transportation for winter and mountain driving conditions.

While the mountains physically separate our communities, we at MSI believe those mountains connect us. In conjunction with the Needs Assessment, the VISTA will build capacity for MSI’s new initiative, the Bridging Mountains Network, through assisting with grants, partnerships, and securing other resources as we look for novel and meaningful ways to connect the communities of the San Juans. The VISTA will help MSI build a strategy for uniting our small mountain communities through youth development programs. The VISTA will help expand MSI’s efforts in stewardship, restoration, citizen science, and monitoring as tools to engage stakeholders and youth across five communities. The VISTA will support several conferences including the annual San Juan Mining and Reclamation Conference, a venue that brings together mining industry, researchers, and community leaders. It is strongly desired that the VISTA have a passion for education and mountain communities, desire to build scientific literacy, and deep sense of inquiry.

Application deadline is Friday, 09 December 2017. Please review the information below and have your supporting documents in order before submitting an application. The position will begin on Monday, 30 January 2017
