The 2021 San Juan Mining & Reclamation Conference reminded us that the power of collaboration to overcome any challenge, be it legacy impacts or a pandemic. The theme, “Solving Pandora’s Box: The application of the arts and humanities to the challenges of mining and reclamation,” delivered a creative, inspirational, and memorable time last week for the 85 participants who joined us in Telluride and 26 online viewers. The conference melded 15 presentations, 15 artists, 2 poets, 5 musicians and performers, and 3 repurposed mine spaces for art and performance space. The event provided a dynamic experience for challenging our viewpoints, translating perspectives across disciplines and landscapes, and improving outcomes for reclamation and communities. Thank you to all who made it such a success!

Please note that the videos are recorded as a block, not individual sessions. We recommend using the Agenda as an approximate guide to time stamps.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:

The primary goals of this annual conference are to educate the public and other stakeholders on the science and policy of mining, mine lands remediation, and water quality as it relates to non-point source pollution, improving mining practices, and addressing water quality impairments through workshops, field tours, and presentations. Each year the conference is hosted in a different San Juan community to highlight the host area’s mining heritage and successes in conducing mine remediation and water quality improvement projects.
